Chasm Architecture served as design architect, in association with architect of record Herrington Architects, on the newly renovated Pratt City Library. The original facility, constructed in 1993, was destroyed by a devastating tornado on April 27, 2011. With very little to salvage the design team redesigned the existing building to serve as a lantern for the community. The main feature of the project is the butterfly roof and the Chasm-designed water collection sculpture at the vehicular entrance of the site. The Cor-Ten steel sculpture was designed to deflect and capture rain water that cascades from the roof. The sculpture also serves as a symbol of the strength and resiliency displayed by the Pratt City Community and their un-shattered spirt that stands strong, no matter the weather. The new facility includes a storm shelter for 35 people, a map of historical Pratt City landmarks in a new terrazzo floor, a business center, and three study rooms. Items from the Pratt City Historical Archives are also displayed throughout the building.
