Alabama A&M University – Student Housing

CHASM served as Design Architect in association with Moody Nolan for the Alabama A&M University New Student Live/Learn Development. The new state-of-the-art facility is a four-story, 183,095 square foot, steel-framed structure with a 3,430 square foot, concrete storm shelter located below grade to accommodate all of the building’s occupants in the event of a tornado.

The $30 million project consists of 570 total beds and contains typical amenities for a modern student housing development, including a multi-story lobby with control desk, reception area, gaming room, laundry facilities, multipurpose spaces, study rooms, and MEP/IT support spaces. The project’s unit types include: 124 quad doubles, 16 quad singles, 12 RA singles, and one on-site resident manager.

CHASM’s responsibilities included design of all planning items and coordinating the shell with MNA. As regional student housing and multi-family experts, CHASM’s role in this fast-track project included coordinating structural, MEP, Fire Alarm, Fire Sprinkler, code compliance, ADA and fair-housing compliance and coordination and permit approval with the Alabama Building Commission.
