AIA Pavilion Design Competition
The Atlanta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Atlanta), the Atlanta BeltLine, Inc., and the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs teamed up to create the National Pavilion Design Competition.
The mission of this competition was to create an iconic landmark that energizes the Adair Park community, strengthening the connection between this historic neighborhood, the Atlanta BeltLine, and the City of Atlanta. This outdoor performance pavilion was anticipated to be the second of a series of artistic multi-purpose small pavilions located in greenspaces along the Atlanta BeltLine. The goal was to be a catalyst for the promotion of design excellence in neighborhoods throughout Atlanta.

CHASM Project Concept: The statement has evolved to suggest that “out of many peoples, races, religions, languages, and ancestries has emerged a single people and nation” – embracing diversity. As we began the design process, we discussed the historic nature of the neighborhood, the challenges of creating an intervention along a linear park, and how a pavilion such as this could influence the area. The decision was made early in the design process that we did not want to create faux history. Instead we wanted to create a modern, dynamic, inviting, eye catching structure that would reflect on the past with careful use of materials and structural expression.
